The perfection of God’s sovereignty abounds unto the riches of His children (1 Corinthians 8:1-2). God makes no mistakes, and He will supply all of our needs (Phil 4:19). It is the heart of pure faith that overflows in great poverty to the richness of liberal generosity. It seems a strange fact that God will reduce our income and savings in order to provoke generosity, wouldn’t we give more if we had more? The truth of God’s dizzying intellect is that He knows for each of us what we need.
My four year old son often surprises me with his willingness to be generous, but I’ve also observed selfish behavior. As I reflected on these two extremes, God reminded me that we are also like children. When we have a lot, we tend to hoard it and get upset when anyone touches it. Alternatively, I have noticed that when I give my son a small treat, he is quick and willing to share with his sister even without my prompting.
Our Heavenly Father wants us to share, not because he doesn’t have much to give his children, but because it is good for us to share. Sharing is a type of love, so in seeking out the needs of others and stepping up to meet those needs we are becoming more like God who is love. As we learn to share, God will increase what He has given us so that we, with open hands, may receive abundance and share that same abundance liberally with the others around us. If we do this in faith, we will represent God’s grace to all who encounter us. There are so many needs in the world today, how do you choose what to give to and when to take anything for yourself? Be yielded to God and He will direct you to the needs you are supposed to meet, then steward well everything else He gives you.
Yielding Prayer
Father, I acknowledge that my fear of what tomorrow will bring is rooted in a lack of trust that you will provide. I believe the truth that you love me, that you have enough, and that you will always give me exactly what I need (Psalm 23:1). Thank you for making up the difference for me, and for dealing with me generously. I submit my riches and possessions to you, and I choose to offer them to you today. Would you alert me to those that need to see your provision today and allow me to be a part of that? Please help me to be a reflection of you in all that I do.
