The doctrine of eternal security is one that is very clear from scripture, here are just a few passages that explain this truth:

• • God gives us salvation freely as a gift which cannot be earned. 

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

• • Our salvation wasn’t up to us in the first place, we neither receive nor retain salvation based on our merits.

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

• • God promises to hold us in His hand.

John 10:28-29 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

• • The Holy Spirit is given to us as the earnest or promise of eternal life. (Meaning God is so serious about you keeping your salvation that a piece of God will go to hell with you if He defaults on His promise)

2 Corinthians 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

So, why do I doubt my Salvation?

Satan is the accuser of the brethren (Rev 12:10). One of his goals is to get you so bound up with the spirit of doubt that you never walk in the victory and peace that God intended for you. His tactic then is to bring accusations against you about your unworthiness as God’s child, tearing down your identity in Christ. He will prey as a roaring lion on your insecurities and shortcomings and have you totally convinced of lies like, “God does not want you,” “God isn’t happy with you,” and “you’re not worthy to be God’s child.” If not properly rebuked, over time these lies will become louder than the voice of the Holy Spirit which confirms your sonship through Jesus Christ. (Rom 8:15-16)

This type of deep seated doubt cannot be solved by memorizing Bible verses, rehearsing God’s truth in your head, or hearing good sermons about eternal security (You’ve probably already tried all of these methods to no avail.) The lies from the evil one currently have free rein in your life and the powers of darkness need to be defeated in your life and mind before you will find the peace of God that passes all understanding. Let’s be clear: you will never perform well enough to feel accepted by God or free from the accusations of Satan. This is an issue of identity and spiritual warfare that needs to be defeated!
