What is it that you do solely because the Spirit of the Lord wills it? Whether ye eat or drink or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31). Eating and drinking are activities we are required to do to survive. True, Paul is telling us to do everything to the glory of God, but he’s specifically referencing those things we must do to live. That is eating, drinking, and for some of us, it is the job we work: do it all unto the glory of God. But what about everything else that is not a direct requirement for our existence? We are ruled by the natural things, those worldly lusts which lead us away heavy laden with sin and choked by the cares of the world.
Ask yourself, What would happen if you were to stop doing all that is not required for you or your family’s existence and instead do only what the Spirit of the Lord compels you to do? Take no thought for your life, for it is only a vapor. I have clothed the lilies and the grass of the field, and I will clothe you (Matthew 6:25-34). God has fed the birds of the air and He will keep you fed. Do not believe the lie that your existence is a natural one, for your existence is wholly supernatural.
There is a beauty in the woman who sits and prays while her house is a mess. God has not judged her for being a poor steward or a bad servant. She hath chosen that good part which cannot be taken from her (Luke 10:40-42). Your home is not yours, you did not bring it with you nor can you take it with you when you leave and if you do not pay the taxes now it will be torn from your hands. It is only the gifts of God which cannot be stolen. Many of God’s children enter heaven empty handed. They are distracted by the cares of this life and have stored up no treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21). It is only God’s gifts which cannot be taken from them. It is only the spiritual which is eternal and tangible in heaven.
Yielding Prayer
Father, so much of my life is lived based on my own priorities, most of which are wholly temporal. Please open my eyes that I may see and direct me so that I know what to do. I commit to listening for your prompting and seeking intently my time with you. Show me what my priorities should be so that my life can make an eternal difference for you. I trust you to meet my needs (Phil 4:19) and to direct my path as I acknowledge you (Prov 3:6).
